The origins of the Nancy School date back to 1878, when the glass and ceramic works exhibited by the Nancy craftsman É. Gallé won many prizes at the Paris World's Fair and attracted much attention, but it really took off with the large-scale exhibition of Gallé and his school at the Paris World's Fair in 1889, where they won numerous grand prizes, including the Grand Prix. The Nancy School was founded as an association in 1901, with Gallé as president and Victor Prouvé (1856-1922) as vice-president. Major artists included Gallé, Prouvé, L. Majorelle, the Daum brothers (1853-1909), Jean-Antonin D. (1864-1930), the Müller brothers (10 of them), Jacques Greubel (1870-1936), Eugène Vallin (1856-1922), Ferdinand Bruno (1862-1955), Louis Esto (1858-1920), Camille Martin (1861-98), Auguste Desch (1877-1942), and Emile Friant (1863-1932). *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Prouvé, V." are listed below.
