1637‐1713 A French Protestant Calvinist theologian. Born near Blois as the son of a Protestant pastor, he studied at the Protestant University of Saumur and then at the Protestant University of Sedan, where he became a professor in 1674. When the university closed in 1681, he fled to the Netherlands, where he became a professor at the Protestant University of Rotterdam and a pastor at the Baronial Church there, where he died. As a representative theorist of Protestants who suffered persecution around the time of the abolition of the Royal Decree of Nantes (1685), he debated with A. Arnauld ("A Defense of Protestant Morals" 1675) and JB Bossuet ("Prevention of Conversion" 1680), and wrote many works, including "Policy of the French Clergy" (1681).
