Japanese: スガ(巣蛾) - スガ

A general term for insects belonging to the Lepidoptera family Yponomeutidae. This is a small family that includes small species with a wingspan of 1-3cm, and over 80 species are known in Japan. Among the representative genus of this family, Yponomeuta , there are species whose larvae build communal nests and live in colonies, hence the name of the family. When the cherry blossom moth, large-headed male moth, and crassulacean moth infest a large number of populations, they can cover an entire tree with their nests, leaving it completely bald. The adult Yponomeuta moths have white or gray forewings that are covered with numerous black spots.

鱗翅目スガ科Yponomeutidaeに属する昆虫の総称。翅の開張1～3cmの小型種を含む小さな科で，日本には80種余り知られている。この科の代表的な属Yponomeutaの中には，幼虫が共同の巣をつくり，群生している種がいるので科名となった。サクラスガ，オオボシオオスガ，ベンケイソウスガなどが集団性で大発生したときは，1本の木全体を巣で覆い，葉を丸坊主にしてしまうことがある。このようなスガの成虫は，前翅が白色あるいは灰色で，多数の黒点を散布する。
