A South African nationalist leader and one of the chiefs of the Zulu people. He joined the African National Congress in 1945 and became its president in 1952. He led the anti-apartheid struggle and was arrested many times, and was under government surveillance in his later years. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960. At this time, the United States offered him asylum, but he declined and returned to his home country, where he died in a train accident in 1967. 南アフリカ共和国の民族運動指導者。ズールー族の首長の一人。1945年アフリカ人民族会議に加わり，1952年に議長となった。アパルトヘイト反対闘争を指導してしばしば逮捕され，晩年は政府監視下に置かれていた。1960年ノーベル平和賞。このとき米国が亡命を申し出たがこれを辞退して帰国し，1967年鉄道事故死した。
