A South African nationalist leader and one of the chiefs of the Zulu people. He joined the African National Congress in 1945 and became its president in 1952. He led the anti-apartheid struggle and was arrested many times, and was under government surveillance in his later years. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960. At this time, the United States offered him asylum, but he declined and returned to his home country, where he died in a train accident in 1967.
