Stone stick

Japanese:
Stone stick

A rod-shaped stone product made from the middle to late Jomon period. Stone rods from the middle period are thick and large, up to 2 meters long, and some are shaped like male genitalia. Some are thought to have been built inside the remains of pit dwellings. From the late period onwards, they became smaller and the patterns became more elaborate. In particular, stone rods from the late period were often carved with carved heads and had tridents, triangular indentations, and lines common to pottery, and some were painted with red pigments. Judging from their shape, they were likely used for magical or ceremonial purposes, but there are many examples of folk customs from the Edo period onwards where stone rods from the Jomon period were worshiped as genitalia. Large ones are often made of andesite, and small ones are made of slate or chlorite schist. Similar relics include stone swords and stone daggers that existed in eastern Japan during the late Jomon period.
