Developed the Electone in 1959. 創業者山葉寅楠によって1889年山葉風琴製造所として設立。1897年日本楽器製造に改称。明治・大正・昭和を通じオルガン，ピアノ，ハモニカなどを製造。1987年現社名に改称。戦後になって，1954年オートバイを製造。1959年にはエレクトーンを開発。その後スポーツ用品，レジャー，音楽教室，エレクトロニクスなど多用化を推進。現在でもピアノ生産台数は世界一，オルガン，電子ピアノも量産。傘下(さんか)にヤマハ発動機がある。本社浜松市，工場浜松，天竜ほか。2011年資本金285億円，2011年３月期売上高3738億円。売上構成（％）は，楽器73，AV・IT15，電子部品６，その他７。海外売上比率52％。
