An old town in Isawa County in southern Iwate Prefecture. The Kitakami River flows through the center, and the central settlement is located at the southern end of the Isawa alluvial fan, along the Tohoku Main Line. It was a former post station on the Ou Kaido road, and also flourished as a river port on the Kitakami River. At the center of a grain-producing region, rice farming and livestock farming are thriving. The brand of rice, Sasanishiki, is particularly famous. In February 2006, it merged with Mizusawa City, Esashi City, Isawa Town in Isawa County, and Kinugawa Village to become a city, Oshu City. 72.34 km2 . Population: 15,420 (2003). 岩手県南部,胆沢(いさわ)郡の旧町。中部を北上川が流れ,中心集落は胆沢扇状地の南端に位置し,東北本線に沿う。奥州街道の旧宿駅で,北上川の河港としても栄えた。穀倉地帯の中心で,米作,畜産が盛ん。特に銘柄米ササニシキは有名。2006年2月,水沢市,江刺市,胆沢郡胆沢町,衣川村と合併し市制,奥州市となる。72.34km2。1万5420人(2003)。
