[The Age of the Proto-Finnish]
The Finns can be traced back to the Finno-Ugric group, the mainstream of the Uralic language family. The Volga River basin west of the Ural Mountains is thought to be the original homeland of the Finno-Ugric language group, but it was the proto-Finns, the Kantasuomalaiset, who moved west from there and advanced to the Baltic Sea coast around 500 BCE. During their migration, they learned agriculture, but came into contact with the Baltic Slavs and absorbed their culture, and then encountered the Germanic peoples, from whom they learned their social system and lifestyle.
