〘 noun 〙 (bolo) A small round confectionery made by lightly baking wheat flour and eggs. Ball. [Handbook of Foreign Words (1912)] [Glossary] (1) It was introduced to Japan as a kind of Nanban confectionery at the end of the Muromachi period, and was called ball. It was commercialized early on, and can be found in the Tenna 3 ( 1683 ) catalog of the confectionery shop Kikyoya in Nihonbashi as "Gomaboru," "Hanahoru," and "Maruhoru." (2) As Western-style baked sweets like biscuits began to gain popularity during the Meiji period, the traditional boro was forgotten. (3) The original confectionery known today as bolo was a baked confectionery sold during the Meiji period under the name "Sono no Tsuyu." Made from potato starch, it was white in color and beautifully packaged, and so gained a good reputation as "sanitary bolo."
