William Searle Holdsworth
1871‐1944
British legal historian. In 1897, he became a Fellow of his alma mater, Oxford University, a professor of constitutional law at the University of London from 1903 to 1908, a lecturer in English law at Oxford in 1910, and a professor in 1922, a position he held until his death. He also worked in government affairs. His academic energy was astonishing, and his major work, A History of English Law (1903-72), consisted of 17 volumes and took nearly 70 years to publish. This book describes the history of English law in all areas, from its earliest period to the court law of 1873-75. As an overview of the entire history of English law by a single author, it is not without its shortcomings in terms of completeness, but it is not only valuable as an encyclopedia of English legal history, but also unparalleled as a comprehensive history that provides a detailed overview of English legal history from a consistent perspective.
