Yuki Magosaburou - Yuki Magosaburou

Japanese:
Yuki Magosaburou - Yuki Magosaburou

A stage name for a string puppeteer. The first was a tayu (a puppeteer) of sekkyobushi, and is said to have built a tower for the Yukiza puppet theater of sekkyobushi in Fukiya-cho, Edo, in 1635 (Kan'ei 12). After that, successive generations of the family continued to perform puppet theater as the head of the Yukiza theater until the end of the Edo period, but the biographies of the second to eighth generations are unknown. The ninth generation Magosaburo (1870-1947), who was active from the Meiji period to the Taisho and early Showa periods, was the son of the copyist Ryokawatei Sen'yu. He revolutionized the traditional string puppetry, and in addition to Gidayuu pieces, he expanded his field from various kabuki-style joruri and nagauta pieces to shinpa plays, and was known as a master for his excellent techniques. The 10th (1907-1997) is the eldest son of the 9th. He was named Magosaburo in 1947 (Showa 22) just after his father's death, from his previous name Isshi. He led a troupe, and from the experimental broadcasting era, he made his way onto television, and created many new puppet shows, including those performed with actors. He also toured schools around the country, contributing to the enlightenment of puppetry. In 1972, he handed over the stage name Magosaburo to his eldest son, Isshi, and changed his name to Sessai. The 11th (1934- ) inherited his father's achievements, and continued to be active in ambitious performances, including avant-garde dramas, and overseas performances, but due to circumstances, he gave up the stage name. The current 12th (1943- ) is the second son of the 10th. He took the stage name Magosaburo in 1993 (Heisei 5) from his previous name, Ryokawa Senyu.
