This harvesting event is held on the 10th day of the 10th month of the lunar calendar, and is also called "the 10th day of harvesting." It is widespread in the northern Kanto region, from the Koshinetsu region to the southern Tohoku region, and corresponds to the harvesting event of Inoko in western Japan. It is the same in all areas in that people give thanks for the rice harvest and pray for a good harvest the following year by offering rice cakes and botamochi to the rice gods, but there are also regional characteristics, such as Nagano Prefecture, where a scarecrow is raised from the rice field and enshrined in the inner garden, and Gunma and Saitama Prefectures, where children visit each house in groups and walk around hitting the ground with straw guns (bundles of straw) to remove the damage caused by moles. There are also places where people make offerings to the moon, as with the 15th night, and places where people abstain from entering radish fields, calling it the "year of harvesting radishes." Some places, mainly in Fukushima Prefecture, consider this day to be the day to send off the rice field god, and to be paired with the rice field god's descent ceremony that takes place around February 10. In addition, judging from the chants sung during straw gun shooting and offerings to the moon, it is believed that this event also has an element of prayer for field crops.
