A city in the state of Saxony in eastern Germany. Located on the banks of the Elbe River, it is famous for its porcelain (Meissen porcelain). Population: 38,000 (1985). The name is said to be related to the fortress Misni, built in 929 by King Henry I as a base for controlling the central Elbe region. The fortress subsequently became the property of the Margrave, then the Margrave of Meissen, and in 1089, together with the urban settlement that had formed nearby, it belonged to the Wettiner family. The city of Meissen gradually developed, and in 1316 it had its own city council. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
