Talma, François-Joseph
Born: January 16, 1763, Paris
[Died] October 19, 1826. Paris. French actor. Raised in England, he made his debut with the Comédie-Française in 1787. In the midst of the revolution in 1789, he performed M. Chénier's Charles IX, and secured his status as a great actor with his revolutionary hymn. However, he came into conflict with the conservative faction of the troupe, and in 1891 he left it with his younger colleagues, moving from the Odéon, which was the troupe's home base at the time, to a theater on the Rue Richelieu. After the troupe was reunited in 1899, this theater became the home of the Comédie-Française. Talma was a favorite of Napoleon, and performed in Erfurt, Germany, in front of the Russian Tsar Alexander and other kings. He is also known for being friends with the painter J. David, who helped him reform the stage sets and costumes. His books include Réflexions sur Lekain et l'art théâtral (1825), a study of the art of acting.
