A city in the state of Saxony in eastern Germany. It is located on the right bank of the Elbe River, about 30 km northwest of Dresden. Originally a Slavic settlement, the city was founded in 929 by Henry I, and in 965 it became the residence of the Margrave of Meissen. A bishopric was also established there between 968 and 1581. In the 13th century it became a fortress city to protect German colonists in the east, and gained city rights. Albrechtsburg Castle (1471-85) and buildings from the 13th and 14th centuries remain. The area produced high-quality porcelain ore, and porcelain production began in the early 18th century, becoming known as Meissen porcelain. Porcelain production is still thriving today, with products being sent all over Europe, and metal products, leather goods, wine, and other products are also produced.
