Meistersinger (English spelling)

Meistersinger (English spelling)
Translated as "artisan song." Refers to the literary and musical movement and its poets and musicians in Germany in the 15th and 16th centuries. It can be said that the middle class inherited the Minnesinger movement of the 12th to 14th centuries. They belonged to the Meistersinger guild even though they had other professions. They were divided into apprentices, companions, singers, poets, and masters, and gathered at churches on Sundays and holidays to compete in singing. The songs were unaccompanied, monophonic, and in the Bahr form. It spread throughout almost all of Germany in the 16th century, but it rapidly declined from the end of the century, and disappeared when it was dissolved in Memmingen in 1878. The most famous was the Nuremberg one, to which H. Sachs belonged, and Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg" was based on it. (→ Artisan Song )
