This temple is located in Saga Kitabori-cho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City, and is of the Tenryu-ji school of the Rinzai sect. Its name is Kakuyuzan. Its principal image is Shaka Nyorai. In 1380 (Tenju 6, Kōryaku 2), Ashikaga Yoshimitsu founded Kosho-ji Temple, with Shun'oku Myōha as its founder, and built a Kaisan-do Hall behind the temple, calling it Rokuo-in. The temple was later renamed Hodō-ji Temple, and in 1385 (Genchū 2, Shitoku 2), it was ranked fifth among the Ten Temples of Kyoto, but was eventually abandoned, and only Rokuo-in was rebuilt in 1667 (Kanbun 7). The main hall houses the Shaka Nyorai statue and the Ten Great Disciples, both of which are said to have been made by Unkei, and the Shariden Hall houses the Buddha's tooth relic, which is said to have been brought from Song by Minamoto no Sanetomo.Other important cultural properties include two colored silk paintings of Muso Kokushi, a silk ink painting of Shaka Departing from the Mountain, a paper ink painting of Ranseki, and Muso Soseki's "Rinko Shiki."
