It has been the name of a place in Wakasa Province since ancient times, and even today there is Oni District in Fukui Prefecture, as well as the large district of Oni District in Obama City. It first appeared as "Kotanuhyo" on a wooden tablet unearthed at the Fujiwara Palace ruins. In 713, the writing was changed to "Oni District." The Wamyō Ruijūshō reads it as "Kōrifu." Oni District was located in the center of Wakasa Province, and was the center of the province, with the provincial capital also being located there. In the Middle Ages, it belonged to Matsunaga Province, and a regular market (Oni District) was also held there. Oni District is said to be the "District Market" where farmers from Tara Manor (present-day Obama City) were fined by the land steward for asking for money in 1243. In 1334, the Shinkengyo (master inspector) and peasants of the manor were robbed of money, silk, indigo cloth, swords, etc. by samurai under the shugodai (deputy governor) on an "Oniki Market Day," but it is known that the market was already a regular one at that time. During the Muromachi period, it became a "day market." It was close to the important port of Obama Port and Kanaya Village (present-day Obama City), where metalworkers lived, and it is thought that various goods were traded at the market. The early modern Oniki Village is said to be the remains of the ancient Oniki District. It was a key transportation point where the Tango Highway ran east to west and the Harihata Pass Road, which led to Omi Province, intersected. The Oniki River flows along the Harihata Pass Road, and the valley in the area is called Oniki Valley. A school of Echizen Kōwakamai dance lived in Oniki Village and called itself Koufuku-za. Within the Oaza Tono area are Wakasahime Shrine, the Kemisaka burial mounds, and the ruins of Yutanisan Castle. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
