An SI prefix representing 10 -6 times the unit (one millionth). The symbol μ comes from the Greek word miklos (small). For example, 1 μm = 10 -6 m. The conventional name for micrometer, micron (μ), is being phased out. Duplicate prefixes such as millimicro (mμ) and micromicro (μμ) have been phased out in favor of nano (n) for millimicro and pico (p) for micromicro.
