Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow

German educator (1734-1805). Properly pronounced "Ro-ho." Born in Berlin. As a Prussian nobleman, he attempted agricultural reform on his estate from the standpoint of physiocrats, and in this connection he felt the need to enlighten the peasants, so he devoted himself to educating the children of peasants. He was friends with JB Basedow, the founder of the Philanthropy movement, and provided financial support for his educational work, but between 1773 and 1779 he also established three peasant schools on his estate, and, in the absence of any models to follow, created textbooks for teachers and elementary Japanese language readers for children.

1734‐1805ドイツの教育家。正しくはロホーと発音する。ベルリンに生まれる。プロイセンの貴族として重農主義の立場から所領の農業改革を企て，その関連から農民の啓蒙の必要性を痛感し，農民の子どもの教育に専念した。汎愛派の始祖J.B.バゼドーと親交があり，その教育事業を資金的に援助したが，1773年から79年にかけてみずからも領地内に三つの農民学校を設立し，なんら手本とすべきもののないなかで教師用教科書と児童用初等国語読本を作成した。
