Lifesaving - Gomyou

Japanese: 護命 - ごみょう
Lifesaving - Gomyou

A Hosso sect scholar in the early Heian period. Born in Kagami County, Mino (Gifu Prefecture). His secular surname was Hata. At the age of 10, he began studying under Doko (date of birth and death unknown) at Kokubunji in the same province, and at the age of 15, he was ordained under Manyo at Gangoji Temple in Nara. He studied Hosso under Shogo (732-811) at the same temple, and is said to have spent the first half of the month practicing asceticism on Mount Yoshino and the second half studying the teachings at the main temple. He was appointed a monk in 806 (Daido 1), a lecturer at the Yuimae School in 808, then a junior priest, and in 815 (Kōnin 6) he was promoted to Daisōzu. In 819, when Saicho tried to build a Daijo Kaidan (Daijo Kaidan) on Mount Hiei, he represented the Sogo of Nara and argued against it. In 823, he resigned from the Sogo and retired to Bonshakuji Temple, but in 827 (Tencho 4), he was restored to the position of Sojo and passed away on September 11, 1st year of Jowa, at the Shoto-in Temple of Gangoji Temple. He wrote many books, including the five-volume Daijo Hosso Kenshinsho (Daijo Hosso Kenshinsho), one of the Tencho Rokushushu (Church of the Six Schools of the Tencho Era).
