Shiro Ohta

...It already appears in the Hitachi no Kuni Fudoki and Wamyosho as Ota Village and Ota District in Kuji County. At the end of the Heian period, Hitachi no Suke Takayoshi, who ruled over Satake District in Kuji County, moved to this area and called himself Ota Shiro. During the time of his son Hideyoshi, according to the entry for November 8, 1180 in the Azuma Kagami, his land was confiscated for not joining Yoritomo's uprising, and it is clear that the confiscated land included Ota along with the seven inner districts of Hitachi Province. For the next 400 years, the Satake clan made this their castle, but during the Muromachi period, they were driven out of Ota due to a family feud.

…すでに《常陸国風土記》や《和名抄》の中に久慈郡太田里･大田郷としてあらわれる。平安末期のころ，久慈郡佐竹郷を領有していた常陸介隆義がこの地に移住して太田四郎と称し，その子秀義の時代には《吾妻鏡》の治承4年(1180)11月8日条によれば，頼朝の挙兵に従わなかったためその所領を没収されたが，没収所領の中には常陸国奥七郡などとともに太田もふくまれていたことが判明する。爾来400年佐竹氏はここを居城としていたが，室町時代に一族内紛により太田を追われたこともある。…
