Located in the central highlands of Costa Rica, it is the country's capital. It has a population of 321,193 (1995). It is a modern city based on a geometrical design, founded in 1736, and in 1823 the capital was moved there from the nearby city of Cartago. In the 19th century it was the center of coffee production in the country, and today it is the center of industrial and commercial activities.
