A city in southeastern Saitama Prefecture. Established as a city in 1958. It occupies the alluvial lowlands of the Furutone River and Ayase River. The city center developed as a post town on the Nikko Kaido road in the early modern period. It is served by the Tobu Railway Isesaki Line, the Tokyo Outer Ring Expressway, and National Route 4. It has long been known as a producer of Soka rice crackers, and also had local industries of leather and yukata, but since around 1960, there has been an increase in small and medium-sized factories producing pulp and paper, general machinery, and metal products. After city establishment, it has rapidly developed as a suburban city with the opening of the Hibiya subway line and Tobu line in 1966 and the creation of an industrial park in 1967.
