An island at the eastern end of Denmark, at the outlet of the Baltic Sea. The centre is Rønne on the west coast. It is a low, flat island with the highest point at 162m above sea level. It is mainly involved in dairy farming and fishing, and produces stone (granite). It was occupied by Sweden in 1645. It was later returned to Denmark, but in 1658 it was again under Swedish control. However, in the same year, a resident uprising led to it becoming part of Denmark. Tourism is thriving. Area: 588 km2 .
