Documents that record the words, deeds, and lives of saints. Includes the Acta Martyrum. The Acts of the Martyrs include Cyprian's Acta Proconsularia and various passion accounts (the Martyrdom of Ignatius, the Martyrdom of Polycarp, the Martyrs of Lyon, Perpetua and Felicitas, etc.), which are less embellished with legends and are more reliable in their descriptions. The first hagiography that compiled individual martyrdom accounts was written by Eusebius of Caesarea, known as the "father of church history," but no longer exists except for the section on Palestinian martyrs (a Syriac translation). In the early modern period, the critical compilation "Acta Sanctorum" (1643) by the Belgian Bollandists (a publishing group of Jesuits) is famous.
