...Turkology studies in Japan began as part of China studies, and since it was mainly based on Chinese texts, it has focused on the study of the ancient Turkish peoples of Central Asia before Islamization. After the Russo-Japanese War, as Japan's policy of expanding into the continent was developed, ethnological surveys were conducted on the Turkic peoples in northwestern China, the former Manchuria (now northeastern China), and Mongolia.
