It is the sex pheromone of the silkworm Bombyx mori , and was named bombykol after its scientific name, as it is an alcohol. It was isolated in 1961 by German Butenandt A. Butenandt and his colleagues, and its chemical structure was elucidated to be ( E , Z )-10,12-hexadienol. It was the world's first chemically confirmed pheromone. Bombykol is produced by female moths and released from lateral vesicles (attractant glands) at the tip of their abdomens. When males receive the sex pheromone with their antennae, they approach the female while shaking their wings and assume a mating posture.

カイコBombyx moriの性フェロモンで，アルコールであることからその学名にちなんで，ボンビコールと名付けられた。1961年に，ドイツのブテナントA.Butenandtらにより，単離され，化学構造も(E,Z)‐10,12‐ヘキサジエノールと解明された。世界で初めて，化学的に確認されたフェロモンである。ボンビコールは雌ガが生産し，腹端にある側胞(誘引腺)から放出する。性フェロモンを触角で受容した雄は，羽を振るわせながら雌に近づき，交尾姿勢をとる。
