A shop that tailors and sells Western clothing. Japan's clothing industry was established in Yokohama by Westerners who arrived there after the port was opened to the public at the end of the Edo period. In 1867 (Keio 3), tailors (men's clothing tailoring) Radage-Oelke & Co. (Germany) and Rotmund & Co. (Germany), and dressmaker (women's clothing tailoring) Mrs. Pearson (England) opened their doors. Masuda Bunkichi and Seki Seikichi, who worked at these companies and learned their skills, opened their own clothing stores in the early Meiji period. Their stores were called Hakuraiya.
