A city in Upper Austria in northwestern Austria. It is located at the foot of Lake Traun, a glacial lake formed by the Traun River flowing out of the Dachstein Mountains. It began as a Celtic and Roman colony, with a wall built in the 12th century and city rights granted in the 13th century. Until the end of the 18th century, it was one of the centers of salt trading in the rock salt-producing region of Salzkammergut, but from the mid-19th century it developed as a summer tourist and health resort.
