His younger brother, Emperor Kokei, was the 23rd Emperor Kenso, and his elder brother, Emperor Okkei, was the 24th Emperor Ninken. They were the grandsons of the 17th Emperor Richu. After their father, Prince Ichibe no Oshihano, was killed by the 21st Emperor Yuryaku, these brothers became exiles and served as horse and cattle breeders in the Oshinumibe of Shijimi no Miyake no Obito in Harima Province. On the night of Niiname some 20 years later, they proved their status by dancing and singing to the provincial governor, Kome (Yamabe no Muraji) no Kodate, and were welcomed by their aunt, Iratsume, to succeed the imperial throne, which had been cut off from their lineage, and became Emperor Kenso and Emperor Ninken.
