French politician. Graduated from the Ecole Normale. In 1944, he participated in de Gaulle's Provisional Government, and in 1956, he became General Manager of the Rothschild Bank. From 1958 onwards, he cooperated with de Gaulle's Fifth Republic, and served as Prime Minister from 1962 to 1968. After de Gaulle's resignation, he became President in 1969. While continuing de Gaulle's foreign policy, he also worked to strengthen France's economic power. He died suddenly in 1974.

フランスの政治家。エコール・ノルマル卒。1944年ド・ゴールの臨時政府に参画，1956年ロスチャイルド銀行総支配人。1958年以降ド・ゴールの第五共和政に協力，1962年―1968年首相となり，1969年ド・ゴール退陣後大統領。ド・ゴールの外交路線を引き継ぐ一方，フランスの経済力の強化にも努めた。1974年急死。
