American mental health activist. Born in Connecticut. After graduating from Yale University, he worked for an insurance company in New York, but after three years on the job, he fell into what appeared to be depression, and in 1900 he attempted suicide and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. He was transferred to several psychiatric hospitals, but the treatment of patients there was full of violence and coercion, so after he was released, he wanted to appeal to society about this reality, and began writing his memoirs in 1905. This was published in 1908 as Till I Met My Soul (1908), which has since been reprinted many times.

アメリカの精神衛生運動家。コネティカット州生れ。イェール大学卒業後，ニューヨークの保険会社に勤めたが，就職後3年にして鬱（うつ）病と思われる状態に陥り，1900年自殺を企て精神病院に入院させられた。数ヵ所の精神病院に転院したが，病院における患者の扱いは暴行，強圧に満ちており，退院後この現実を社会に訴えようと思い，05年から手記を書きはじめた。これが08年に出版された《わが魂に会うまで》(1908)で，その後大いに版を重ねた。
