This refers to fields that have existed for a long time, as opposed to newly developed shinden (new rice fields). They are also called koden or furuhata (old fields). In the Edo period, this usually refers to fields that were assigned rice yields by land surveys conducted before the Genroku era (1688-1704) and were incorporated into the village tax, but the distinction between hondahata and shindahata varies depending on the region and time period. Hondahata is generally more productive than shindahata, so tax was heavy and cultivation of crops other than rice was strictly restricted.
