Ginza

Japanese: 銀座 - ぎんざ
Ginza
[1] 〘Noun〙① A silver mint established by Tokugawa Ieyasu in May 1601. It was not government-run, but was organized by a group of townspeople who were granted a charter as Ginza. The places where silver coins were actually minted were Kyoto Ginza, which was moved from Fushimi, and Edo Ginza, which was moved from Sunpu (Shizuoka City). ※Ginza Chokuroku (mid-Edo-late) "In the 17th year of the Keicho era, a request was made to establish a Ginza in Gofu, and the order was granted."② = Ginko (bank)※Western Affairs (1866-70)〈Fukuzawa Yukichi〉First edition "All paper money and bills are issued from the government's Ginza."[2]① A place name in the southwestern part of Chuo Ward, Tokyo. It is divided into 1-chome to 8-chome, centered on the street from Kyobashi to Shinbashi, and is commonly called Ginza Hachicho. The place name comes from the fact that (1)①, which was moved from Sunpu in 1612 during the Edo period, was established here. Formerly known as Shinryogaecho, now it is one of Japan's most famous shopping districts. ② Used figuratively as the name of a place with a lot of foot traffic. Following the example of "Fune-no-Ginza" and "Alps Ginza" [Additional Notes] (2) (1), there are shopping districts and shopping streets named Ginza all over the country. There are also many "Ginza..." districts that include the name of a place, such as "Sunamachi Ginza" and "Togoshi Ginza."
