1812‐62 Russian novelist. Born into an aristocratic family, he began writing novels in the 1830s while working as a civil servant, and later devoted himself to writing. In his early works, he portrayed the life of high society in a romantic style, but in the 1840s he switched to Gogol's style of "naturalism," writing a series of works that were called "physiological reportage" and realistically depicted the social customs of the city. In his novella "The Kind" (1847), he treated a so-called "superfluous person" as the protagonist. In 1847, together with the poet Nekrasov, he acquired the publishing rights to the magazine "The Modern Man," and provided pages for revolutionary democrats.
