Russian novelist. Born into an aristocratic family, he began writing novels in the 1830s while working as a civil servant, and later devoted himself to writing. In his early works, he portrayed the life of high society in a romantic style, but in the 1840s he switched to Gogol's style of "naturalism," writing a series of works that were called "physiological reportage" and realistically depicted the social customs of the city. In his novella "The Kind" (1847), he treated a so-called "superfluous person" as the protagonist. In 1847, together with the poet Nekrasov, he acquired the publishing rights to the magazine "The Modern Man," and provided pages for revolutionary democrats.

ロシアの小説家。貴族の家に生まれ，役人生活のかたわら1830年代から小説を書きはじめ，のちに文筆に専念した。初期にはロマン主義の作風で上流社交界の生活を批判的に描いたが，40年代になってゴーゴリ流の〈自然派〉に変わり，都会の世態風俗を写実的に描く〈生理学的ルポルタージュ〉といわれる作品を次々と書き，中編《縁者たち》(1847)ではいわゆる〈余計者〉を主人公として扱った。また47年に詩人ネクラーソフとともに雑誌《現代人》の発行権を入手し，革命的民主主義者たちに誌面を提供した。
