This is a Rinzai sect Myoshinji temple located in Unganji, Otawara, Tochigi Prefecture. The mountain name is Tozan. In 1281 (4th year of Koan), Takamine Kennichi (Bukkoku Kokushi) practiced asceticism in a hermitage here, but in 1283, the regent Hojo Tokimune built a large Zen temple, so Kennichi invited his teacher Mugaku Sogen (Bukko Kokushi) to be the founder, and he himself became the first abbot. Taihei Myojun (Butsou Zenshi) then became the second abbot, and these three zen masters are called the "Three Buddha Founders of Unganji." In 1590 (Tensho 18), the temple was burned down by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but Muju Myotoku rebuilt it. Currently, the temple has a mountain gate (the oldest in the temple), a Buddhist hall, a hojo, a kuri (kitchen quarters), and a specialized training hall. The temple treasures, the portraits of Bukkoku Kokushi and Butso Zenshi, are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
