Solomon Lefschetz

1884‐1972
American mathematician. Born in Moscow and raised in Paris. After graduating from the École Centrale, he went to the United States to become an engineer, but lost both his hands in an accident in 1910. This led him to enroll in graduate school at Clark University in Massachusetts, where he earned a degree in mathematics (1911), and taught at the University of Nebraska and the University of Kansas. During this time, he investigated the topological structure of algebraic surfaces, thereby developing the theory of Abelian integrals on algebraic surfaces. For his contributions to algebraic geometry, he received the Bordan Prize from the Institut de France in 1919.

アメリカの数学者。モスクワに生まれ，パリで育った。エコール･サントラルを卒業後，アメリカに渡って技師となったが，1910年事故で両手を失った。このためマサチューセッツのクラーク大学の大学院に入学して，数学で学位をとり(1911)，ネブラスカ大学やカンザス大学で教えた。この間に，代数曲面の位相的構造を究明して，それによって代数曲面上のアーベル積分の理論を発展させた。この代数幾何学への貢献により19年にフランス学士院からボルダン賞をうけた。
