1884‐1972 American mathematician. Born in Moscow and raised in Paris. After graduating from the École Centrale, he went to the United States to become an engineer, but lost both his hands in an accident in 1910. This led him to enroll in graduate school at Clark University in Massachusetts, where he earned a degree in mathematics (1911), and taught at the University of Nebraska and the University of Kansas. During this time, he investigated the topological structure of algebraic surfaces, thereby developing the theory of Abelian integrals on algebraic surfaces. For his contributions to algebraic geometry, he received the Bordan Prize from the Institut de France in 1919. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
