Born: March 1, 1837 in Humuresh, Moldova
Died: December 31, 1889. Iasi Romanian writer. Born into a farming family, he studied at a seminary and became a deacon, but later became an elementary school teacher. He became friends with the poet M. Eminescu in a literary circle in Iasi, the capital of Moldova, and at Eminescu's urging he wrote original folk tales. Between 1875 and 1879, he published folk tales that made full use of the idiom of the common people, such as Harap Alb (The White Nigger) and Soacra cu trei nurori (The Mother-in-law and the Three Daughters-in-Laws). Between 1881 and 1883, he contributed his autobiography Amintiri din copilǎrie (Memories of Childhood) to a magazine. This work, which depicts the lives of rural people and the origins of the protagonist in a humorous manner, has become a favorite book among Romanians.

ルーマニアの作家。農家に生れ，神学校に学んで補祭となったが，のち，小学校の教師となった。モルドバの首都ヤシの文学サークルで詩人 M.エミネスクの友人となり，そのすすめで創作民話を書き，1875～79年に『白い黒んぼ』 Harap Alb，『姑と3人の嫁』 Soacra cu trei nuroriなどの民衆の言葉を豊かに駆使した民話を発表。 81～83年の間に自叙伝『幼年時代の思い出』 Amintiri din copilǎrieを雑誌に寄稿。ユーモラスな語り口で農村の人々の生活と主人公のおいたちを描いたこの作品はルーマニア人の愛読書となっている。
