Bone porcelain. A type of porcelain unique to England, made by mixing animal bone ash, mainly cow bone ash, with porcelain clay and kaolin and firing it. Thomas Frye (1710-62) of Bow Pottery is said to have been the first to patent porcelain using bone ash in 1748. Later, around 1800, Josiah Spode (1754-1827) of Stoke-on-Trent mixed bone ash with porcelain clay and fired it with a lead glaze to produce a transparent white porcelain. Since this success, it has been widely used to this day as a representative British porcelain. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
