A dense region at the center of a galaxy with a diameter of less than a few hundred light years. Most galaxies with an absolute magnitude brighter than about -15 have a central nucleus, and if the galaxy is relatively close, it can be seen as a star-like bright spot in a photograph. In the case of large galaxies, the central nucleus shows some activity, and those with particularly strong activity are called active galactic nuclei.
