Wheatstraw, P. - Wheatstraw

...Since the 1960s, as the social lives and consciousness of the black masses have changed dramatically, the role of the blues for them seems to be shrinking. Representative performers (who in most cases also wrote the lyrics and composed the music) include Blind Lemon Jefferson (1897-1930), who played the earliest guitar and sang in the southern style, Charlie Patton (1887?-1934), Leroy Carr (1905-35) and Peetie Wheatstraw (1902-41), who pioneered urbanization using the piano in the 1920s and 1930s, Big Bill Broonzy (1893-1958, guitar), who promoted band blues that incorporated the swing feel of jazz in the 1930s, and the legendary Robert Johnson (1912?-38), who died young in the mid-1930s, with a premonition of the next generation hidden within his strong southern sensibility.
