Logbook - Koukainisshi

Among the various types of logbooks kept on board, the ship's logbook is specifically called a log book. All important matters concerning the ship's operation are recorded, whether at sea or anchored, but the word originates from the fact that in the past, particular importance was placed on recording the log readings during the voyage. The main ship's logs are the deck logbook, the engine logbook, and the radio logbook, and the deck logbook includes the deck watch logbook, the ship's logbook, the main logbook, and the official logbook. The deck watch logbook is always kept in the bridge chart room, and the officer on duty records the ship's arrival and departure in port, course, itinerary, course changes, time of passage at key points, engine RPM, weather, wind direction, wind force, cargo handling conditions while anchored, onboard operations, accidents, etc. according to a set format. The ship's logbook is a clean copy of the deck watch logbook, which is checked and signed by the captain every day and serves as an important official record of the ship's voyage. The essential logbook is a simplified summary of the main points of the ship's logbook for each voyage, and is used as a business document. The official logbook is required to be kept by the Seamen's Act, and the items to be recorded and the period for which it must be kept on board are specified.
