[Died] May 2, 1818. Elmina. Dutch military officer and Governor-General of the East Indies (in office 1808-11). He cooperated with the French Revolutionary Army in the invasion of the Netherlands, and was recognized by Napoleon. He was promoted to marshal in 1807 and appointed Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. During his four-year tenure, he strengthened the military in Java in preparation for a British invasion, and tried to reduce the burden on the people by suppressing the power of the local monarch. However, his hasty reforms that ignored the real situation in the territory drew criticism both at home and abroad, and he was finally summoned to his home country. After the restoration of the Dutch monarchy, he became Governor-General of the Dutch territories in West Africa in 1815, and died there.
