Stowing (English spelling)

Japanese: 採掘跡充てん(採掘跡充塡) - さいくつあとじゅうてん（英語表記）stowing

This refers to bringing rubble (also called refuse) into the remains of a mine, etc., and packing it down to hold down the surrounding rocks, minimizing the occurrence of cracks in the rocks and making work safer. After ore or coal is extracted from the face of a mine or coal mine, a large space is left behind at the site. If this space is left open, the surrounding rocks will gradually crack under earth pressure, causing the rocks to collapse, creating a dangerous situation. This is done to prevent this, but when mining in areas where surface subsidence is a problem, such as under rivers, it is necessary to prevent changes to the surface or riverbed.

鉱山等の採掘跡に〈ずり〉(〈ぼた〉ともいう)を持ち込み，詰め込んで周囲の岩石を押さえて岩石の亀裂の発生を軽度にとどめ，作業の安全を図ること。鉱山や炭鉱の切羽で鉱石や石炭を採掘した後は，大きな空間がその採掘跡に残る。その空間を残しておくと，周囲の岩石は地圧を受けてしだいに亀裂を生じ，岩石が崩落するので危険である。それを防止するために行うものだが，地表沈下が問題となる所，河川の下などを採掘するときには，地表，川底に変化を生じないようにすることが必要である。
