Dutch genre painter. Born in Rotterdam. After studying under the landscape painter Nicolaes Berchem in Haarlem, he moved to Delft and joined the city's painters' guild in 1655. He started out with scenes of taverns and soldiers resting, but eventually he created a new type of elegant genre painting, competing with Vermeer, who was three years younger than him, with subjects of mothers and children and maids in the tranquil rooms and courtyards of middle-class homes filled with warm sunlight. Today, their paintings, commonly referred to as the "Delft School," express a natural interior space not seen in previous genre paintings, through their skillful use of perspective and effective depiction of light.

オランダの風俗画家。ロッテルダム生れ。ハールレムで風景画家ベルヘムNicolaes Berchemに師事したのちデルフトに移住し，1655年同市の画家組合に入会。最初は居酒屋や休息する兵士の情景から出発したが，やがて暖かい陽光に満たされた中流家庭の静謐な室内や中庭における母子や女中を主題とする新しい種類の上品な風俗画を，3歳年下のフェルメールと競合しつつ創始した。今日通例〈デルフト派〉と呼ばれる彼らの絵は，遠近法の巧みな駆使と光の効果的な描写によって以前の風俗画には見られない自然な室内空間を現出させている。
