Located in the northwest of the Netherlands, it was originally an inlet of the North Sea called the Zuiderzee, but in 1932 the construction of a dam turned it into a lake. Since 1930, five polder plots covering 2,260 km2 have been reclaimed, and by 1980 2,190 km2 had been completed.
