Untoan - Untoan

This temple is located in Undo, Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. It is one of the four Echigo Dojo temples of the Soto sect. It is called Kinjo-san. It was founded in 717 (Yoro 1) when Fusasaki, the grandson of Fujiwara Kamatari, built a temple for the memorial service of his mother, and was a Shingon Ritsu sect temple at the time. In 1420 (Oei 27), Uesugi Norizane appointed Don Eio as the founder and converted the temple to the Soto sect. It flourished as the family temple of the Uesugi clan, and the 10th head priest, Hokuko, was the devout follower of Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen. The temple treasures include a face plaque written by Emperor Juntoku and a military fan.

新潟県南魚沼(みなみうおぬま)市雲洞にある寺。曹洞(そうとう)宗越後(えちご)四道場の一つ。金城(きんじょう)山と号する。717年（養老1）藤原鎌足(かまたり)の孫にあたる房前(ふささき)が母の追善供養(ついぜんくよう)のために一寺を建立したのが始まりで、当時は真言律宗(りっしゅう)であった。1420年（応永27）上杉憲実(のりざね)が曇英恵応(どんえいえおう)を中興開山とし、曹洞宗に改めた。上杉家の菩提寺(ぼだいじ)として栄え、第10世の北高(ほくこう)は上杉謙信(けんしん)、武田信玄(しんげん)の帰依(きえ)を受けた。寺宝は順徳(じゅんとく)天皇御宸筆(ごしんぴつ)額面、軍配団扇(ぐんばいうちわ)など。
