Also known as ocean thermal energy conversion. Power generation using the difference in water temperature between the ocean surface and the ocean floor. Fluids with low boiling points (ammonia, freon, etc.) are vaporized using the heat from the ocean surface to turn a turbine and generate electricity with a generator. The fluid leaving the turbine is then returned to liquid form using cold water from the ocean floor, and the process is repeated. The United States, France, Japan, and other countries are advancing development of this method, and in the United States, 50kW was generated on the island of Hawaii in 1979, while in Japan, Tokyo Electric Power Company succeeded in generating 100kW in the Republic of Nauru in 1981. In Japan, Kyushu Electric Power has a 50kW test facility on Tokunoshima Island, and Saga University has a 75kW test facility in Imari. →Related topicsNew energy Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
