〘名〙① (葉がよじれてあやになっているところからいう) ヒノキ科の小高木でサワラの園芸品種。枝繁く、葉は線形でやわらかく、裏が白色。檜杜杉(ひむろ)。※檜垣嫗集(10C後か)「千はやふるかすひの宮のあやすぎはいくよか神のみそぎなるらん」② 杉の園芸品種、「えんこうすぎ(猿猴杉)」の異名。③ 杉の薄板を、あじろのように編んで、垣にしたもの。〔随筆・安斎随筆(1783頃)〕④ 鼓の筒や、三味線の胴の内側に彫刻されたジグザグを重ねた模様。音波の差によって生ずる音のボヤケを防ぐためのもの。※洒落本・娼妓絹籭(1791)二「むくのすそもやうも、こいつア、あんした。あやすぎに二葉葵か」
